RETURN TO GAME SUMMARIES

JUNE 30, 2007 - Saturday - Padres vs. Dodgers - City Center #1 - Dodgers Win 19-7

The champions toast victory

This game started with us winning the coin toss and the Padres immediately jumped on us for 3 runs. There wasn't a single Dodger fan that wasn't holding their breath thinking that this would be a deja vu of our last game. Only nobody in the stands were saying anything. We got the third out and before coming into the dugout we gave our "Hit, Run, Score" cheer and realized that we were only down by three.

Eli Leads Off With A Hit

In return for the Padres' favor we immediately came back 3 runs to even the score and finish the first inning. If you took the time to read my Game 4 Preview you will understand what happens on other teams. The tail end of their lineup came to bat and we held them scoreless.

They still ended up loading the bases as we got their number three batter out for the final out just before their home run hitter came to the plate. We dodged a bullet, but we ended the inning with lots of enthusiasm and excitement to get back to hitting.

Aaron Leads Off Third

Adam continues the rally

In the bottom of the second, and in a matter of about 15 minutes we jumped on them for 11 runs leaving only one runner on base. 11 scored batters, 1 left on base, and three outs, means that 15 Dodgers batted in the bottom half of the second. That is incredible! That is one and a half times through our ten player lineup. The Padres were stunned because there was no weak spot in our lineup. We never had consecutive outs because we had power hitters staggered throughout the batting order.

Adam Brings In Eli

Leading off the third the Padres were able to get two more runs, but we came back to the plate with a 14- 5 lead in the bottom of the third. We added 5 more runs, and would have had more but we aggressively ran ourselves into a bizarre double play that had Brian striking out but running to first on the dropped ball. While he was running to first, Julian ran home and they ended up getting both Brian and Julian out to stop the enthusiasm momentarily. Matt then got a hit, followed by Dylan, Nathaniel, and then we were back to Elijah at the top of our batting order.

Zach's Great Hit - Look Closely For The Ball

Going into the fourth inning we knew that if we held them to 4 runs or less that we would be the Champions. They made it interesting by scoring two runs, but Nathaniel made a great catch in right for the second out of the inning. Then came the final out as the batter hit a grounder to first base and it bounced weird and hit Brian in his ankle. In a heightened moment where time slowed down, Brian picked up the ball and ran to his bag for the out. While still in full stride he flung the ball towards the pitcher's mound knowing that he made the final out of the inning and he was ready for our next time at bat. As our players ran to the dugout we heard the ump call out loudly "That's the ballgame!!!" and we gave a loud cheer of excitement.

The Last Swing Of The Game - See The Ball?
Nathaniel's Catch

What a relief to have this win under our belt. The last week has been really stressful as we waited for Thursday to come and then lost our first championship game. Having the second game delayed until Saturday only added to the drama. What a great season it has been.
