APRIL 27, 2007 - SCRIMMAGE - Dodgers at White Sox
We put together a scrimmage game against the White Sox. Due to Boy Scout camps the White Sox were actually 5 of their own players and the rest were Yankees and super leaguers. We also lost Aaron to a Scout campout.
We saw a lot of positive out on the field with a lot of hustle and some good contact at the plate. Without a doubt there were lots of first game jitters. We looked official as uniforms were handed out just before the start of the game.
We also identified lots of areas that need improvement. Most of this was due to players learning new positions to them. This led to a few fielding mistakes that will diminish as our players gain more experience. We put Matt, Brian, Jeremy, and Elijah on the mound. Accuracy was hit and miss and passed balls led to numerous steals. This should also lessen as the pitchers regain control from the long off season.
SANDLOT MOMENT - We had a Sandlot moment in center field as a long fly ball safely was swallowed up into Nathan’s mitt. Pure joy was on his face as he looked at the ball safely nestled into the web of his glove.
HOME RUN - We watched one sail over our heads and over the center field fence. This showed us that it really is possible to hit one out of this large diamond.
OUTFIELDERS - PARENT CHALLENGE - The outfield for the 13-14 league is huge when compared with the 11-12 year old league. Our outfielders have the tough responsibility to cover a lot of ground. I encourage all of the parents to walk around the back side of the home run fence and pretend they are the ones out their scooping up the line drive and throwing home. Look how far it is from the fence to home plate. This will give you a new appreciation for just how strong our outfielders arms really are as they fire it from the fence to the infield. The coaches have really been impressed with the throwing abilities of our boys.
