RETURN TO GAME SUMMARIES

JUNE 16, 2007 - Saturday - Mariners vs. Dodgers - Windsor - Dodgers Win 8-7

What a hard fought battle in the early morning hot summer heat. The Windsor ballfield is a true dust bowl featuring a moundless infield that always provides for interesting pitching and plays at the plate. The fact that the softball rubber is about 8 feet closer to home makes the pitches arrive faster, the throws to pick off at second longer, and the wild pitch plays at the plate more exciting.

The worst position to play on Saturday morning was definitely the catcher, due to the heat and dust. Adam carried out the duties in all but the last inning where Eli dawned the green armor for the final defensive stand that ended with the Mariner's tying run on third trying to score home on a pop fly over Brain's head at first. Looking almost safe from my perspective, I was very relieved when the ump looked at Eli's glove at home and called the runner out.... What a relief!!!

Coach Chuck brought donuts and juice for all of those who arrived at the early 8:30 hour. This was a very nice touch and a great way to start off our Saturday morning of fun. I think it does a lot of good to arrive early and enjoy one another's company.

I have been very impressed with the constant play of Zach, Nathaniel, and Aaron throughout the season. They always show up quietly enthusiastic and ready to play. Nathaniel hussled in the pre-game outfield fly practice put on by Aaron's father. I think that practice drill really helps our outfielders effectiveness as they were ready to go from the first pitch of the ballgame.

While the outfielders were catching fly balls, I took the infielders to the fence and we threw hard balls at them to get their reflexes going and to get them loose at the waist to bend and catch the ground balls. This is a drill that is very demanding and requires a lot of concentration on their part. Zach is always fun to watch as he giggles when they get through. Adam always comes away filthy from diving. Aaron always comes away looking as clean as when he started, never having missed a ball.

The wins have been kept to just three so far this year, but the last half of the season has been really competitive. In each game we have been able to find lots of hard effort by our players and they should be commended for keeping their spirits high.

TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED

Brian holds runner on 1st
BRIAN PLAYED HARD AT FIRST - I was impressed with Brian's hussle at first base. He scooped up almost every throw made to him. And the one that did get by was chased down so quick that the runner did not advance.

Nate played a mean 3rd base.

OUT OF THE PARK - In a game filled with deep shots, Nathan came through with another home run. He has been the only Dodger to go over the fence this year, he came up with his second homer Saturday. Unlike the first home run that was a super high fly ball that just cleared the fence, this one was a power shot. It exploded off the bat in a line drive that cleared the fence by at least 30 feet in dramatic fashion. That boy has got some power and that ball didn't stand a chance.

As a side note, in talking with the Mariner coach it turns out that the pitcher who gave up the home run is a best friend of Nate as well as son of the coach. Before the game they both had been talking trash about one striking the other out and the other hitting him out of the park. I guess that we know who won that battle. The Mariner coach promised that Nate would now be cut off from any food at his house for the rest of the summer.

JOSH GETS A GOOD NIGHTS SLEEP - Joshua gets the dedication award as he was scheduled to camp out up Hobble Creek Canyon Friday night. Instead of missing the game he ate his smores around the campfire and then headed home to his nice warm bed. I hate to see the young men miss the campouts, yet this was an important game and I would have hated to play it without Josh. He played a good center field and he brought in runs with his bat.

JULIAN SCORES - I am going to have to review the scorebook to figure it out, but everytime I turned around Julian was on base. I have come to love watching his quiet way of doing all the right things. He has become really smart running the bases this season and he is so small that the other teams often underestimate his quickness. It was great to look at him at third base and say "Julian, we need you to score. On a past ball there should be no hesitation.... Score!"

Jeremy powers another shot

JEREMY'S BAT CAME TO LIFE - We have been razzing Jeremy lately about the way he refuses to share his wonder bat. As long as he keeps hitting the way he has I encourage him to continue not sharing it and he should start sleeping with it warmly tucked under his pillow.

Early in the game Jeremy caught the ump by surprise as he drove a great deep shot down the third base line landing about 8" fair and 8' from the fence. The ump relied upon my view to call it fair and it was a perfectly placed shot. It was great to see Jeremy's smile as he stood on second base after the great hit. I have loved watching his confidence grow in the last half of this season.

COLLISION ONE - Early in the game, the Mariners sent their runner home with Adam catching the ball and taking a strong defensive stance. The runner, in a less than sportmanlike fashion, slid into home with his metal cleats high and took Adam out in the thigh hip area.... "Heeeee'ssss OUTTT!!!" yelled the ump and the sweet sound helped take away Adam's pain!

COLLISION TWO - Later in the game Adam was on third base and he stole home only to find that he was being greeted by both the pitcher and the catcher forming a wall. Adam's cleats dug in instead of sliding and his momentum thrust him forward torso first and this turned into an ugly hit of Adam's hip into the pitcher's elbow. "Heeeee'ssss OUTTT!!!" was heard again and this left Adam lying on the ground writhing in pain. This collision left Adam battered, as the sun beat down upon him. He laid in the dust of the batters box with the disappointment of his teammates evident by their loud groans. This could have been a bad turning point, but he shook it off, much to my pleasure as I wondered what I would have been feeling if I were in his shoes. Mental toughness is a valiant quality.

Jeremy recovers after the game

COLLISION THREE - The most dramatic collision of the day came as a pop fly was hit to shallow left field. At shortstop, Aaron called for the ball as he ran backwards. Meanwhile Jeremy drew a bead on the ball from Left field and it was evident that neither was going to drop the ball and neither realized the other was coming. Aaron being the shorter of the two hit the top right side of his skull directly into the left jaw of Jeremy. As the collision took place it was secondary that the ball stayed in Jeremy's glove as the immediate thoughts were for the safety of our two players.

Aaron & Dad before the game

I sprinted from the dugout to left field only to find Aaron collapsed on the grass while Jeremy was holding the side of his mouth and spitting blood. Jeremy's braces had done a bad job of dicing the inside of his mouth and the swelling was immediate and the blood flowed. Aaron gave that look of "To the Bat cave" (Old Snickers commercial), being in a hazy daze. Surprisingly he came back to reality and did not want to be removed from the game. Jeremy spit out some blood and slapped his hand in his glove and let me know that he was ready to go. We really dodged a bullet on that play and the umpire took a few moments to explain to the boys what they should do in the future when it comes to calling out for the ball. This was a class act on the part of the umpire..... Maybe that is how we derived our name as the Dodgers... We dodge the bullets!!!

Eli throwing hard!

ELI GOES 5 2/3 INNINGS - We really had to hand it to Eli for his fine pitching performance. Eli opted to not go to a Varsity Scout campout with his father so that he could be at our final season game. He started strong and had the Mariners down by allowing them to just score 1 run through the first 4 innings. The Mariners crept back into the game and Coach Chuck had to make a tough call with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 6th with two outs and only a 3 runs separating us from them. Eli reluctantly handed the ball to Coach as Jeremy was called in from left field to finish off the game. Eli then went behind the plate and Adam took Jeremy's spot in left field.

Jeremy confidently took the mound with the heart of the Mariner line-up ready to face him. He looked good and started throwing really hard. The first batter came to the plate and hit one all the way to the fence over Adam's head and runs were scoring. Another shot to center found the tying run on third with the winning run on second. Thanks to quick team play we cut our losses and Jeremy was still set to win the game for us.

The next batter popped a little fly right beyond Brian at first base into shallow right field. He ran back onto the grass and when he realized that he could not catch it he stopped the pursuit so as to allow our right fielder the chance to field the ball. Unknowingly to him, the heavy grass slowed the ball to stop immediately behind Brian and when he realized this he turned, picked it up, and fired it to Eli waiting at homeA wild pitch brought on hysteria as the runner dashed for home, Eli dashed for the backstop, and Jeremy played heads up ball by dashing to cover home. . In slow motion we saw the ball flying in perfect flight in front of our first base dugout and into the awaiting glove of Eli at home. In yet another dust cloud of confusion the ump looked into Eli's glove and yelled out...... "Heeeeee'sssss OUTTT!!!" We won the game to finish the regular season on the strong play of a complete team effort. We learned to never give up, for that is where the vistories are found. There was good pitching, fielding, and hitting.... Go Dodgers!!!

P.S. EXTRA GAME FUN - The game following ours was a forfeit due to only 5 players showing up. More proof that Scout camp just decimates a season end when the rain make-up games are not announced well ahead of time. The Nationals' coach took on three of our players and another lad to field a team of 9 to face the Padres. I donned Adam's catching gear and took over the honors as the plate umpire. It was a great perspective change as I watched our very own Aaron from the Dodgers pitch the first 2 innings for the Nationals. Not to brag, but Aaron, Nate, and Adam added a huge power punch to the Nationals' lineup and they beat the Padres really bad in the 95 degree heat. The photo shows my view as Adam was batting. The bruise on my left shoulder taught me what a foul tip really feels like. It has been 30 years since I have been hit with one while crouching behind the plate.

P.S.S. GATORADE HOME RUN DERBY - Later Saturday evening my two boys wanted to practice pitching and hitting so we headed to the City Center for some fun. We were sunburned from the early morning games and yet we were revitalized with the beautiful summer evening. As the sun went down we invented a cool game to determine just how much abuse one half filled Gatorade bottle could take from three Leavitt's hitting it off a tee. You probably were not aware that a single bottle can take at least 40 hard hits before exploding. You should give this game a try sometime as it really is fun for all able bodied ages.

Please note that water bottles are only good for one hit. must use gatorade.
