ALABAMA COLLAPSE INJURES CHILDREN

Deck Collapse Injures Children

CHULA VISTA, Ala. -- Several emergency crews responded to an accident at Chula Vista Campground in St. Clair County Tuesday afternoon.
Officials say more than 20 teenagers were standing on a deck that leads to the camp's dining hall when it collapsed. Witnesses say the balcony was about 15 feet high and it appeared to break away from the building during the collapse.

Twenty-three teens were transferred to area hospitals -- two were taken to Children's Hospital in Birmingham. Camp officials say none of the injuries are life-threatening and injuries range from possible broken bones to minor scratches and bruises.

Camp organizers contacted parents of injured children and the parents of all 110 campers to reassure them of the teens' safety.

Chula Vista Campground is a summer camp for area church groups. Organizers say teenage groups were attending camp this week.
