ELECTRICAL OUTLET EFFICIENCY TESTING

EOET TOOLS
RECEPTACLE TENSION TESTER

E.O.E.T - REQUIRED

Provides a simple way to check the spring contact tension of a standard straight blade receptacle. Designed to test outlets with the following ratings: 15A, 125V, 2 pole, 2 wire; 15A, 125V, 2 pole, 3 wire; 20A, 125V, 2 pole, 3 wire. Completely insulated in an impact-resistant plastic housing and is safe to use on energized receptacles. Each blade has an independent spring to relieve stress and assure consistent readings over a long life. When tension falls below 10 ounces, that tells you to monitor the receptacle closely for further deterioration. Tension of 4 ounces is the lowest point which a receptacle should be allowed to remain in service. NFPA Standard 99-1996, Ref. 3-3.3.3(d).

2-PRONG NEON LIGHT TESTER

E.O.E.T - REQUIRED

Provides a simple test to check for power and to clearly identify what blades are hot.

PURCHASE - This tool is available at any home center, Radio Shack, and even many grocery stores. This is the most inexpensive tool available and to use it in the one hand testing mode requires that it be this cheap model. Purchasing a unit with a better bulb for more money will not allow for it to work as we need it.

3-LIGHT CHEAPO TESTER

E.O.E.T - OPTIONAL

Provides a simple, yet quite unreliable method for testing 3 prong outlets. And even though they are unreliable they should still be part of your testing kit.

PURCHASE - This tool is available at any home center. This is the second most inexpensive tool available for testing outlets. The $3 models are not any better or worse than the $25 models. Once you learn of their limitations you can more effectively use them in a normal inspection.

VOLTAGE SNIFFER

E.O.E.T - OPTIONAL

This tool needs to be part of every electrical test kit. It runs on triple A batteries and is the best suited for our jobs. I have 7 different brands of sniffers and this is by far the best with the sensitivity adjusted for our use. My other sniffers now collect dust.

PURCHASE - This tool is available from electrical wholesalers. I have not seen the Flukes in the home centers.
